Welcome to ISSCO!

ISSCO, the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas, was established in 1992. Professor Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore, was appointed President and Professor Wang Ling-chi, Department of Ethnic Studies, UC Berkeley, Secretary-Treasurer together with a number of regional Board members.

ISSCO is a scholarly, non-political, non-profit professional society of individuals and institutions interested in and committed to the study of Chinese overseas. The primary purposes of the society are to advance research and scholarly exchange in the study of Chinese overseas, to provide means for research and publications, and to organise and support national and international conferences.

President's Message

The ISSCO general meeting was held on 18 August 2013 at the end of the very successful ISSCO 8 conference which took place in Kuala Lumpur. The new ISSCO Board was elected, and I should like to thank the ISSCO members for electing me as the new President. There are some new faces: Prof. Madeline Hsu as Vice President, and Prof. Min Zhou and Prof. Glen Peterson as At-large Representatives.

We are grateful to Prof. Teresita Ang See for staying on as Secretary/Treasurer to ensure smooth transition, and we thank Ms. Angela Yu for agreeing to help Tessy in her work. In a sense the election of the new board marks a new phase in the history of ISSCO, as the founding members, namely Prof. Wang Gungwu. Prof. Wang Ling-chi and Prof. Peter Li decided not to accept nomination for the new board. They will of course continue to give ISSCO their strongest support. We thank Prof. Leo Suryadinata for his six years' of service as ISSCO President.

He had worked very hard for the good of the society, which has been active in promoting the study of the Chinese overseas and in organizing conferences. The new team will build on the solid foundation laid down by our senior members, and as President I will consult members as well as work closely with fellow board members. Thank you.

About Prof. Tan Chee-Beng (?ө)

Tan Chee-Beng (Ph.D., Cornell Univer?sity, 1979) is Distinguished Professor at the Department of Anthropology, Sun Yat-sen University. He had previously taught at the then University of Singapore, University of Malaya and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

With Southeast Asia and south China as his research sites, Tan's major areas of academic interest have been cultural change and identity, ethnicity, Chinese overseas, Chinese religion, anthropology of food, and indigenous people and development.
